Custom Compounding

Who it's for

Patients who need a medication that isn't available commercially, a different dose strength, a non-tablet form, or something allergen-free.

What’s included

  • Pediatric formulations — liquid suspensions in flavours kids will actually take (bubblegum, grape, banana).
  • Custom dose strengths — when the commercial strength doesn’t match what you need.
  • Topical preparations — pain creams, hormone creams, dermatology bases.
  • Allergen-free versions — lactose-free, gluten-free, dye-free, preservative-free.
  • Veterinary compounding — flavoured for the species (tuna, chicken, beef), unusual dose strengths.
  • Hormone replacement — BHRT preparations made to your prescriber’s formula.

How it works

  1. Get a prescription from your doctor, nurse practitioner, or vet. If they’re not sure what’s compoundable, point them to us — we’ll consult directly.
  2. Drop off the script in person, or have your prescriber fax it to us at the number on our Contact page.
  3. We’ll confirm timing — most preparations are ready in 24–48 hours.
  4. Pick up your prescription with a printed sheet covering storage, shelf life, and how to use it.
  5. Refill ahead of time — for chronic compounds, we’ll remind you a week before you run out.

What it costs

Compounded medications are priced based on ingredients, complexity, and pharmacist time. We quote the price before we make it so there are no surprises. If you have a private drug plan, we’ll provide the documentation most plans require for reimbursement.

Frequently asked

Common questions about custom compounding.

What is compounding?
Compounding is when a pharmacist creates a medication from individual ingredients — a custom dose, an alternate form (cream, gel, troche, liquid), or a formulation that removes an allergen (lactose-free, gluten-free, dye-free). It's done from scratch in our pharmacy.
Do I need a prescription?
Yes — compounded medications require a prescription from a licensed prescriber (doctor, nurse practitioner, dentist, or veterinarian). We're happy to coordinate with your prescriber if they're not familiar with what's compoundable.
What can you compound?
Pediatric liquid formulations (often flavoured to taste better), custom dose strengths, hormone replacement, topical pain creams, dermatology preparations, sterile and non-sterile preparations, and veterinary medications. If you've been told a medication is unavailable, ask us — we may be able to make it.
How long does it take?
Most non-sterile compounds are ready within 24–48 hours. Some require ingredients we order in, which can extend turnaround by a few days. We'll always give you a firm pickup time when we accept the prescription.
Is it covered by my insurance?
Many private drug plans cover compounded medications, though some require pre-authorization. We provide detailed receipts with ingredient breakdowns that most plans accept. OHIP does not typically cover compounding fees.
Is it safe?
Yes — we follow USP and Ontario College of Pharmacists standards for compounding, including dedicated equipment, ingredient sourcing from licensed suppliers, and batch records for every preparation.
